Canadian Oil Producers Reduce Hedging as Brent Crude Hits $88.9
Canadian oil producers are stepping back from their hedging strategies as international oil prices reach their highest levels in years. Brent crude is trading at $88.9 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) is at $82.6, both marking multi-year highs. Hedging is a strategy used by oil producers to lock in future selling prices to mitigate the risk of price declines, but it prevents them from benefiting from price increases. Due to past experiences with price surges, Canadian oil producers have been reducing their hedging ratios recently, reflecting expectations that oil prices will continue to rise. Producers that reduce hedging can maximize profits when prices increase, but they are also exposed to the risk of losses in the event of a price crash. International oil prices have recently peaked due to the situation in the Middle East, with Brent crude rising to $90.03 following renewed attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen. This has also impacted the energy stock market, with the energy sector ETF XLE rising 3% on the 10th as Brent crude showed strength. Announcements regarding OPEC's supply, geopolitical events in the Middle East, and production adjustments by major oil-producing countries are expected to influence oil price trends.
