Closure of the Dogecoin ETF to Take Place on October 14, 2026
The CEO of Bitwise, Hunter Horsley, announced on October 8, 2026, that the Dogecoin (DOGE) ETF will close due to a lack of demand from institutional and traditional investors. The final liquidation of the fund, operated under the ticker BWOW, will take place on October 14, 2026, after less than a year of activity since its launch in November 2025. Horsley described the closure as 'tragic,' despite his personal affinity for Dogecoin, and highlighted a disconnect between traditional audiences and cryptocurrency enthusiasts. He stated that 'ETF users simply did not want to put money into Dogecoin,' although this could change over time. Adverse market conditions also influenced the decision to close the ETF. Bitwise continues to expand its strategy in the digital asset ecosystem, having launched an ETF linked to NEAR Protocol on September 29, 2026. Current shareholders do not need to take specific actions in the closure process, but those wishing to sell their shares must do so before the closure. Currently, there are two other Dogecoin ETFs in the market: 21Shares (TDOG) and Grayscale Dogecoin Trust ETF (GDOG), launched in November 2025 and January 2026, respectively.
