Deutsche Bank to Launch Cryptocurrency Custody Services by Year-End for Corporate and Institutional Investors
Regulatory-Compliant Digital Asset Custody Services for European Corporations and Institutional Investors
Deutsche Bank AG has announced plans to launch a digital asset custody service aimed at corporate and institutional investors in Europe by the end of this year.
The bank intends to begin onboarding its first clients, contingent upon the completion of relevant regulatory procedures, providing custody services for Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and certain stablecoins, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance. The new service will allow Deutsche Bank to manage wallets and private keys on behalf of clients, enabling the transfer of stored digital assets to third parties. This will reduce the burden on clients to build and maintain their own custody infrastructure.
At launch, the service is expected to support Bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as stablecoins or electronic money tokens like USDC, EURC, and EURAU. In the future, the bank may expand the range of assets based on client demand, product approvals, risk management, and regulatory processes, with tokenized financial products also included in the roadmap.
In terms of security, the service will implement secure key generation, hardware-based protection, segregation of duties, multi-person approval, independent warm and cold storage, redundant technical configurations, and backup and recovery systems. Selected external technology and infrastructure providers will also be utilized for specific technical components.
The target clients include those from the bank's corporate banking and investment banking divisions, encompassing corporations, asset management firms, hedge funds, custodians, brokers, and government agencies. Client onboarding will be based on the bank's standards, due diligence, and risk tolerance.
Progressing Towards MiCA Compliance with License Expected in October, More European Banks Entering the Market
The launch of the service requires the completion of regulatory procedures under the EU's MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets) framework. According to Heinrich Frömsdorf, the bank's spokesperson, they expect to obtain the custody-related MiCA license in October, after which they plan to proceed with onboarding the first clients.
Gerald Podobnik, co-head of Deutsche Bank's corporate banking division, expressed that digital assets are not intended to replace traditional financial systems but are seen as a crucial complement. The goal is to provide clients with access methods that offer reliability and safety, coexisting with existing market infrastructure.
Deutsche Bank has been advancing its efforts in the digital asset space for some time, having partnered with Swiss firm Taurus in 2023 to apply for a digital asset custody license in Germany. Reports indicate that by 2025, they plan to integrate Bitpanda's custody infrastructure while collaborating with Taurus to build services for corporate and institutional investors.
In Europe, other banks such as LBBW, DZ Bank, and Commerzbank are also entering the cryptocurrency custody space, while Standard Chartered Bank and BBVA are providing services for institutional investors. Globally, major financial institutions like BNY Mellon, State Street, US Bank, and Citigroup continue to enter the market, and Deutsche Bank is joining the trend of regulated financial institutions developing digital asset infrastructure.
The timing of the service launch, target regions, supported assets, and scope of services may change based on regulatory requirements, internal approvals, market trends, and client demand.

A bond selloff, weaker tech stocks, spot ETF outflows and a long liquidation wave all added pressure. The $80,000 area is now the key support, while $83,000 is the first level bulls need to reclaim.
