Ethereum Sepolia Test Network Increases Gas Limit to 200 Million
Ethereum's Sepolia test network activated the Glamsterdam upgrade on October 6, raising the gas limit to nearly 200 million, over three times the main network's 60 million limit. Gas measures computing work on Ethereum, and the limit determines how much work fits into a block. The increase was tied to epoch 353024, starting at 13:53:36 UTC. A snapshot of 25 blocks on Etherscan from October 8 showed gas usage between 24% and 43% of the new limit. The higher limit allows for more capacity during peak demand, helping to stabilize transaction fees. However, larger blocks pose challenges for validators, who must collateralize ETH to confirm blocks. Ethereum Foundation researchers cautioned that limits above 40 million could lead to propagation issues. Previous adjustments included a validator vote in February 2025 that raised the limit from 30 million to 32 million, and later to 60 million. Future changes on Ethereum's roadmap aim to improve load handling, including block-level access lists and proposer-builder separation. Vitalik Buterin outlined a long-term plan to overhaul the protocol over three to four years. The announcement did not set a date for the Hoodi testnet or a mainnet upgrade, so the main network retains its 60 million gas limit for now.
