FNB Brings Crypto Trading in South Africa to Nearly 9 Million Customers
First National Bank, the second largest bank in South Africa, has launched a crypto trading service in South Africa aimed at nearly 9 million retail customers. The operation stems from a partnership with the local exchange VALR, announced on October 6, 2026, according to Coinfomania.
The new tool, called "Crypto Investing," allows users to buy and sell digital assets without leaving the banking app already used for stock trading.

Key Points
- FNB opens cryptocurrency trading to nearly 9 million retail customers through the "Crypto Investing" feature.
- Available assets include BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL, and the stablecoin USDT.
- Investments can start from R10, approximately $0.60, with a market active 24/7.
- Purchased crypto remains within the FNB ecosystem and cannot be transferred to external wallets or exchanges.
- The South African Reserve Bank oversees the regulatory compliance of the service.
FNB and VALR Launch Crypto Trading Together in South Africa
FNB, the retail arm of the FirstRand group, has built the feature together with VALR, giving customers a way to buy, sell, and trade digital assets without leaving the banking app. The trading covers BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL, and USDT, managed through the same infrastructure that FNB already uses for stock trading.
How the Service Works: Features and Operational Details
The entry threshold is low. Customers can start with a minimum investment of R10, about $0.60, and the market never closes: trading remains available 24/7, in line with the operation of the cryptocurrencies themselves. The feature integrates into FNB's existing products, including Share Saver, Share Builder, Share Investor, and Share Zero, according to Crypto Briefing.
However, there is a restriction to note. Cryptocurrencies purchased through FNB remain locked within the bank's ecosystem: customers cannot move the coins to an external wallet or a competing exchange. Crypto Briefing reported that FNB has tied this limit to compliance with South African exchange control regulations and security reasons, as keeping funds in a controlled environment reduces the risk of customers falling victim to fraudulent wallets.

Market Context and Oversight by the Reserve Bank
FNB is not the only bank moving in this direction: Crypto Briefing reported that Discovery Bank had already initiated a similar partnership with the exchange Luno in November 2025.
By the end of 2025, the ownership of crypto in South Africa was estimated to involve more than 6 million people, with major local platforms holding digital assets worth over R25 billion. The oversight of the new service falls to the South African Reserve Bank, which monitors financial activity in the country, including cryptocurrency trading, to ensure that the offering meets regulatory standards.
Potential Impact and Future Developments
For VALR, the agreement represents a shortcut to distribution: connecting to the customer base of a large bank offers a reach that is difficult to build exchange by exchange. FNB has stated that it intends to expand the list of supported assets and add educational resources to help customers understand the risks associated with digital currencies.
This move positions FNB as a competitive player in the South African crypto market and could prompt other banks to offer similar services as customer interest and trading volumes develop.
