Former Google Vice President Warns of AI Risks to Children
Former Google Vice President Tom Siegel has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) could pose greater harm to children than social media. He stated that AI companies are expanding their services without safety measures and urged them to slow down development and establish independent safety standards. Siegel announced on the 22nd that he has joined Common Sense Media's Youth AI Safety Institute as its inaugural executive director. He emphasized that the impact of AI on children is serious and that it is unrealistic to expect the industry to solve these issues on its own. Siegel pointed out that AI companies are providing new features to children without adequate protective measures in place. Risk factors include suicide, psychosis, and cognitive offloading. He suggested that OpenAI and Anthropic could implement stronger age verification procedures to prevent minors from accessing chatbots. Google countered by stating that parents can block their children's access to search engines and that AI search features are beneficial for children's learning. Siegel proposed creating independent safety standards that could hold AI companies accountable, and he plans to expand assessment systems that independently measure the risks of AI tools, similar to automotive crash tests. He warned that companies must proactively strengthen safety measures.
