Greek Soldiers Among Nine Suspects in 8 Million Dollar Crypto Pyramid Scheme
Two Greek servicemen are among nine suspects accused of operating a cryptocurrency pyramid scheme that raised approximately 8000000 dollars from around 10000 investors. The suspects were scheduled to provide statements to an investigating magistrate on Monday. Police have arrested 17 individuals linked to the alleged scheme, which prosecutors claim functioned as a pyramid scheme, promoting investments in cryptocurrencies through a controlled platform. None of the allegations have been tested in court, and the figures are sourced from police reports. The recruiting effort was reportedly conducted by a local civic group. A 44-year-old leader of the Association of Artificial Intelligence Friends in Katerini was remanded in custody after failing to convince the magistrate and prosecutor. Six others from the initial group of seven arrested were released under restrictive conditions with bail set between 15000 euros and 20000 euros. The two military suspects hail from Pieria and Larissa, with investigators believing the Larissa serviceman learned the scheme from a contact during overseas travel. Investors were encouraged to contribute starting from 800 euros, while VIP investors were solicited for 5000 euros, with promises of doubling their money. In Katerini, the organization reportedly signed up 1842 members and collected around 2000000 euros. The investigation began in July following two anonymous complaints submitted through the Greek government's digital services portal.
