Man in Bodaybo on Trial for Secret Mining Farm with 8 Million Rubles in Damages

In Bodaybo, Irkutsk region, a secret mining farm linked to a 44-year-old local resident has been uncovered. According to the prosecution, the illegal cryptocurrency mining took place in an industrial workshop and cost energy providers 8 million rubles. The equipment operated from January 2021 to January 2025 in a rented workshop belonging to the accused's wife. Inside, there were 39 cryptocurrency mining devices and auxiliary equipment, which helped to conceal the farm's operation and reduce noise. The prosecution claims that the farm was connected to a transformer substation without a contract with the energy supply organization and bypassed metering devices, resulting in the electricity bills falling on the landlord. The man is charged with causing significant property damage through deception. Criminal liability arises from the illegal connection and substantial damages. If found guilty, he faces up to five years of compulsory labor or imprisonment. Industrial mining is permitted in Bodaybo, but participants must be registered in the state register of miners.
