Polygon Plans Permissionless Burn of 100 Million POL
Polygon is preparing a permissionless contract to allow anyone to permanently burn 100 million POL, approximately 83% of a base-fee collector holding 121 million tokens. The contracts are currently on testnet and will move to mainnet after final Security Council signatures. The initial burn will destroy 100 million POL at once, followed by quarterly burns that community members can trigger. The base fee is a network-determined charge that is burned, with each fee adding POL to the collector. After the first burn, about 21 million POL will remain in the collector. The planned burn represents 1% of POL's initial supply of 10 billion tokens, with the total supply listed at approximately 10.716 billion POL, making the burn roughly 0.93% of the total. This burn will not impose a hard cap on POL, as ongoing emissions are set at an effective annual rate of 2% starting June 2025. Nailwal stated that POL has been deflationary since January 2026 and reported Polygon's revenue for 2026 at 24.5 million, compared to 8.41 million for Arbitrum and 5.6 million for Near. The next step is mainnet deployment following remaining Security Council approvals, with the first 100 million POL yet to be burned.
