Summer Attacks on Cryptocurrency Owners: 13 Cases Across Different Countries
This summer, there have been at least 13 physical attacks aimed at cryptocurrency robbery. Eight attacks were recorded in France, two in Brazil, and one each in the USA, Indonesia, and Thailand. In June, six incidents occurred, including the kidnapping of a Brazilian crypto blogger from his Porsche, with a demand to transfer $3,000 in cryptocurrency. Four cases were reported in France, mostly attempts to break into homes. In the USA, three armed individuals attempted to rob a couple on the street. In July, four attacks took place, including the kidnapping of Russian crypto investor Artem Ivanov in Bali, with a demand to transfer $5 million. In Brazil, two men in police uniforms kidnapped an 18-year-old crypto blogger who transferred around $150,000. In August, three attacks occurred in France, including the kidnapping of a couple from their home and the prevention of an attack on a woman by the police. Experts link the rise in attacks to the compromise of personal data. According to Chainalysis, since the beginning of 2026, victims of attacks have lost over $30 million.
