Bitcoin Core merges privacy fix into v32, v31 patch remains open
Bitcoin Core has merged a privacy fix into its 32.x source branch to address issues correlating private-broadcast connections with ordinary node connections. The backport for 31.x is still open as of Oct. 8, affecting users of the latest stable release, 31.1. Private broadcast is disabled by default. The backport from Oct. 1 includes the original change merged into the main development branch on Sept. 25. A proposal to bring the fix to 31.x was approved on Oct. 6 and is marked with a 31.2 milestone, but no release date is set. The official download page lists 31.1 as the latest version, while the 32.0 directory contains test candidates, including rc3 binaries dated Oct. 6. Users can enable the private broadcast option via sendrawtransaction, which uses short-lived connections to Tor or I2P peers. The connection-linking issue specifically affects private-broadcast activity. The fix separates behaviors, ensuring private-broadcast peers are excluded from normal discouragement handling, while misbehaving private peers can still be disconnected. The patch prevents discouraging an ordinary peer from disconnecting private-broadcast connections sharing its address. The 31.1 release notes previously addressed an IP-address leak issue, and the new change focuses on observable effects of peer handling. Developers have marked private broadcast as experimental, limiting its privacy claims to risk reduction.
