Fogo Mainnet Has Been Stopped For 46 Hours With No Restart Timeline
Fogo's mainnet has not produced a block since Saturday afternoon, roughly 46 hours after validators stopped the network in response to the theft of 400 million FOGO tokens from the Fogo Foundation.
The halt has frozen every position on the chain, including $987,291 of deposits across four protocols, and the Foundation has not said when the network will restart, how it was compromised, or which addresses received the tokens. Its only published plan is to upgrade the network so those addresses are restricted, an action available to Fogo because seven operators run its voting validator set.
The 400 million tokens are 10.3% of FOGO's 3.88 billion circulating supply and 4% of the 10.05 billion in existence, worth about $2.9 million at Monday's price. FOGO traded at $0.007333, down 3% over 24 hours and 18.4% over seven days, for a market capitalization of $28.5 million and a fully diluted valuation of $73.7 million, according to CoinGecko.
The token set an all-time low of $0.00704157 at 23:47 UTC on Sunday, during the halt, and trades 88% below the $0.062549 record it reached on Jan. 15, the day Fogo launched its public mainnet after a Binance token sale.
The Foundation's first account of the incident said the chain itself was unaffected.
"The Fogo Foundation experienced a compromise by an unknown actor which unfortunately resulted in 400mm FOGO tokens being sent to a bad actor," it posted at 9:13 p.m. ET on Aug. 28. "The Foundation alerted exchanges immediately and is actively communicating with law enforcement as well as forensic experts. There is no impact to the Fogo blockchain, which continues to operate as normal."
Fifteen hours later the network stopped. "In the last hour the Fogo Mainnet has been temporarily halted as a precautionary measure following the detection of unauthorized activity," Fogo posted at 12:29 p.m. ET on Aug. 29. "The halt is being initiated to prevent further movement of the affected assets. During the halt, the network will be upgraded to restrict the addresses associated with the incident."
That post is still the most recent word from the project. Fogo has not disclosed the attack vector, the addresses involved, what restricting them means at the client level, or a restart time.
Fogo's own explorer shows the last block, 718,525,971, as two days old, transactions per second reading "N/A," and the epoch clock stuck at 16.56% through epoch 7,994, per Fogoscan. Requests for individual block pages now return "Sorry, we're unable to locate this block." The Foundation-run mainnet RPC endpoint at mainnet.fogo.io returned an HTTP 502 error when The Defiant queried it on Monday.
Onchain balances are fixed where they were on Saturday. Fogo's tracked total value locked has read exactly $987,291 for three consecutive days, per DefiLlama, against $1.32 million on Aug. 28. Decentralized exchange volume over the past 24 hours is zero, and DefiLlama tracks no stablecoin supply on the chain. The largest frozen positions are $1.18 million at liquid staking protocol Ignition LST, $719,195 at lending market Pyron, $687,372 at Brasa Finance and $268,095 at Valiant Trade.
A stop that takes minutes is a function of how the validator set is built. Fogo runs a curated set: "anyone can permissionlessly join the network as a non-voting validator. In order to become a voting validator for a zone, you must be approved by the Fogo Validator Council," the Foundation wrote in its validator design post in October 2025. Foundation stake was "split equally at launch across 7 operators," and the council itself is a seven-member multisig of technical operators, a researcher, ecosystem representatives, a Foundation delegate and a security specialist, which vets candidates against a 1 million FOGO self-stake and administers "the removal of any non-performing validator from the set."
Fogo markets that design as the source of its 40-millisecond block times. It is also what makes a coordinated halt and a client-level address blacklist available as an incident response, and what leaves users waiting on seven operators to bring the chain back.
Exchanges cut off token movement on Fogo's rails while leaving order books open. KuCoin's public currency API reports deposits and withdrawals both disabled for FOGO's only chain, with a 1,000-confirmation deposit requirement. Gate's API returns deposits and withdrawals disabled and trading enabled. Spot volume across venues was $2.3 million over 24 hours, so holders on exchanges have kept trading a token whose chain has been offline since Saturday.
Fogo's halt notice told users to "rely only on this Fogo channel for updates." An account calling itself Fogo Foundation, with the handle @FcgoFNDN and a purchased checkmark, has been posting updates of its own. It copies Fogo's bio and linktree, joined X in February 2014, has 1,750 followers, and its older posts are consumer complaints written in Turkish.
At 10:46 a.m. ET on Aug. 30 it posted that "the community vote for the $FOGO restoration & compensation plan is now live" and that the plan "will support affected users and help restore the $FOGO token supply." The post carries a link card spoofing fogo.io, has drawn about 7,400 views, and is set so that only some accounts can reply. No such vote exists in any Fogo channel.
The last public appearance by anyone at the project is a video co-founder Robert Sagurton posted at 2:20 p.m. ET on Aug. 29, captioned "Friday night turned out to be a true Fogolized Friday." He has posted nothing since.
Fogo is one of two networks that stopped themselves over the weekend. Cronos halted on Sunday during an exploit of the Tectonic lending protocol and restarted on Monday by rolling its state back to a block before the attack, discarding almost 11,000 blocks and close to two hours of everyone else's transactions along with the attacker's balances. Both halts turned on a validator set small enough to act within an hour of detection, and Cronos shows what the step after a halt can cost users who had nothing to do with the incident.
The weekend follows a month of halts elsewhere. MANTRA, TAC and KiiChain all stopped producing blocks in late August over a shared Cosmos EVM flaw, and Moonwell lost $8.7 million to MAMO price manipulation on Base last week.
Fogo raised about $7 million selling 2% of supply on Binance at a $350 million valuation before its January launch, following an $8 million community round on Echo a year earlier. The Foundation has not committed to a post-mortem, a compensation plan or a restart time.
