Grayscale Research Head Claims Computing Power Becomes a New Scarce Digital Asset

Grayscale's research head, Zach Pandl, stated in an article on The Stack on September 24 that amid the AI boom, the demand and supply paths for computing power are diverging, benefiting owners of powered and operational computing capacity and creating growth investment opportunities. Pandl noted that while digital demand can expand instantly, infrastructure development such as electricity, data centers, chips, memory, and cloud services takes years. When AI agents perform multi-step tasks, the computing power consumption can be 5 to 50 times greater than typical chatbot interactions. The article cites data from the International Energy Agency and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, indicating that data centers are expected to account for half of the growth in electricity demand in the U.S. by 2030, with new projects potentially taking over five years to connect to the grid. Even with electricity in place, permits, skilled labor, electrical equipment, cooling systems, GPUs, high-bandwidth memory, and networks are still required. Continuous value will flow to power producers, data center operators, and AI cloud service providers that can convert electricity into computation.
