JR Kyushu to Enter Financial Sector Based on SBI
On the 24th, the Nikkei reported that JR Kyushu has formed a business partnership with SBI Holdings to enter the financial sector. Utilizing the comprehensive financial app being developed by SBI, which will handle banking, securities, insurance, and cryptocurrency, JR Kyushu will offer services under its own brand to users. According to the report, a formal announcement is expected on the 25th, with plans to start services within the fiscal year 2027.
The mechanism is Banking as a Service (BaaS), where financial institutions lend functionalities to external companies. In the first phase, JR Kyushu will take on the banking agency role for SBI Shinsei Bank, enabling banking functions like deposits to be used through the app. The addition of securities and cryptocurrency is planned to follow sequentially, as reported by Nikkei.
Collaboration with SUGOCA and Points
The app will integrate with the transportation IC card "SUGOCA" and the point service "JR Q-Po." It will offer point rewards based on deposit balances and preferential interest rates for housing loans applied through the app. Additionally, there are plans to allow users to purchase stocks and investment trusts with points accumulated from railway usage, and to consider investment trust purchases via JR Kyushu's credit card.
JR Kyushu has a customer base of about 5 million through its app and point membership, with approximately 60% of its consolidated sales for the fiscal year ending March 2026 coming from non-railway sectors such as real estate, hotels, and retail.
Railway companies are expanding into financial services, with JR East starting "JRE BANK" in partnership with Rakuten Bank in 2024, and JR West forming a capital and business alliance with Resona Holdings in May. Kintetsu Group Holdings also announced a partnership with Mitsubishi UFJ Bank in July. This is the first time a railway company has broadly handled not only banking but also securities, according to Nikkei.
JR Kyushu has also been involved in the Web3 sector. In 2023, it launched an NFT project based on the Astar Network (ASTR), and by March 2026, it has revamped "JR Kyushu NFT" into an experiential accumulation-type digital service called "Next Favorite Things."

No sale has been confirmed. On October 8, 2026, US government-linked wallets moved 12,267 BTC, worth about $1.01 billion, out of a wallet holding funds seized in the 2016 Bitfinex hack, to new unlabeled addresses with no exchange deposit recorded. The Bitcoin price briefly fell below $81,000 on October 9, 2026, its lowest level in nearly three weeks, after repeated failures near $87,000. A bond selloff, weaker tech stocks, spot ETF outflows and a long liquidation wave all added pressure. The $80,000 area is now the key support, while $83,000 is the first level bulls need to reclaim.
