KRX After-Hours Market Marks One Month, 90% of Transactions from Retail Investors

The after-hours trading market launched by the Korea Exchange (KRX) for all market stocks has been in operation for a month. Market experts point out that this mechanism enhances the convenience of trading for investors, allowing the market to respond more promptly to changes in after-hours information. However, it also faces challenges such as a high proportion of individual investors, insufficient liquidity, and the need for institutional improvements. Data shows that in the first week of the after-hours market (from September 14 to 18), individual investors accounted for as much as 90.4% of the transaction volume, while foreign and institutional investors accounted for only 6.7% and 2.6%, respectively. Industry insiders are concerned about the imbalance in market participation structure, as an excessive bias towards individual investors may lead to insufficient market liquidity and amplify price fluctuations of individual stocks, especially small and mid-cap stocks and popular thematic stocks. Some brokerage personnel suggest adjusting institutional investment rules and attracting more professional investors by lowering the participation threshold for foreign capital.
