OpenAI Bans Two AI-Assisted Covert Influence Operations
OpenAI has released a report stating that it has recently banned two groups conducting covert influence operations using its models. These operations combined AI with traditional techniques to create fake front entities and false identities. Among them, the Russian operation "Dark Clark" controlled a fake think tank named "Social Research Center (SRC)" and is suspected of using ChatGPT to write internal reports and generate content while conducting influence activities in Latin America. This operation has been assessed as an IO breakthrough at level 5, marking the first case to reach this level since OpenAI began disclosing related activities. OpenAI stated that AI has not changed the fundamental patterns of such influence operations but has increased their scale, efficiency, language capabilities, and content production abilities, making it easier for attackers to create false identities, forge content, and disseminate information through real media channels.
