Quantum Computers Pose Risk to Bitcoin, But Not the End

By: www.crypto-insiders.nl|10/10/2026 15:02:29

Quantum computers could potentially uncover the secret keys of crypto wallets in the future, but this does not automatically mean the end of Bitcoin. Researchers are working on new security measures to prevent such attacks. A powerful quantum computer could calculate the secret key from a public key, allowing attackers to steal bitcoins. Europol has warned about these risks, particularly concerning the keys of crypto wallets. However, it is important to note that uncovering a key is not the same as disabling the entire blockchain, which contains the public record of Bitcoin transactions. Some techniques that protect the blockchain are more resilient to quantum attacks. In 2024, the American institute NIST approved three security standards designed to withstand quantum attacks, but Bitcoin has not yet adopted these. Researchers like Tim Ruffing from Blockstream and Bitcoin developer Jameson Lopp are working on adaptation routes and proposals for a gradual transition to safer solutions. Preparations are needed for wallets, crypto exchanges, and users to adapt to this new technology.
