The UK has imposed 31 new sanctions against Russia
The UK has introduced a package of 31 new sanctions against Russia, targeting LNG vessels, disinformation networks, and individuals involved in the torture of Ukrainian civilians and the militarization of children. The restrictions are intended to increase pressure on Russia's energy export revenues. The new sanctions affect vessels that Russia uses to circumvent restrictions and export gas. Some of these vessels have been operational this year. London notes that the restrictions target a sector that Russia considers an important source of future income. The sanctions package includes eight individuals linked to the unlawful detention and torture of Ukrainian civilians in occupied territories. Seven individuals are under restrictions due to their involvement in the militarization of Ukrainian children, including those who have been deported. The sanctions also affect seven individuals involved in spreading pro-Russian disinformation, among whom are four citizens of Georgia. The UK Minister for Europe, Lord Wood Anfield, stated that the new restrictions aim to reduce revenues supporting Russian aggression and individuals involved in crimes against Ukrainian civilians. The UK has already imposed sanctions on 600 tankers used to circumvent Western restrictions. London has also extended the licensing mechanisms for LNG transportation for Japan and South Korea to support their energy security.
