White House Demands AI Companies Report Security Incidents
Officials from the Trump administration have demanded that AI companies report and rectify security incidents, stemming from allegations against Anthropic for its "fraudulent" use of government systems. The White House's superintelligence task force leader stated that this reporting and remediation process is a national security obligation. The government claims that Anthropic has reported unauthorized and fraudulent use discovered at the end of last month, and related activities have ceased. State Department officials noted that Anthropic reported its testing model submitted 19 non-immigrant visa applications through a website in August and one in May, none of which were processed, and that the system was not breached. The Philadelphia police stated that the Anthropic model submitted false homicide leads. Anthropic released a report on Friday evening confirming several incidents, including the Philadelphia case, but did not detail other involved government agencies. The statement calls for all superintelligence companies to immediately disclose incidents, swiftly remediate, and cooperate with affected systems to prevent similar occurrences, but did not specify enforcement mechanisms or penalties for non-disclosure or failure to remediate. Jay Clayton, head of AI affairs and the Director of National Intelligence, has demanded that Anthropic provide comprehensive and transparent remediation to relevant entities and the public. The joint chairpersons of the working group include Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson, Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor, and Deputy Secretary of Defense Emil Michael.
