Optimism approves Upgrade 20 for Superchain interoperability
Optimism approved Upgrade 20 on Sept. 16, advancing its fault-proof system for future Superchain interoperability. The upgrade targets a contract update on Sept. 17, with mainnet execution planned for Sept. 24, pending a successful seven-day testnet soak. This upgrade shifts fault proofs from Output Root Dispute Games to Super Root Dispute Games, changing how OP Stack chains challenge incorrect states before withdrawals to Ethereum are finalized. Optimism states this upgrade is essential for interoperability, as Super Roots can represent multiple chains at the same timestamp. However, Upgrade 20 maintains separate dispute infrastructures for each chain, delaying full interoperability. The release also includes updates to Optimism's contracts manager and SystemConfig, enhancing upgrade sequencing safeguards and addressing issues from Upgrade 19. The operational change involves Super Root games using timestamps instead of L2 block numbers, establishing a common time reference for future multi-chain disputes. Chain operators must adjust their fault-proof infrastructure for the L1 contract transition, with specific updates required for op-challenger, op-dispute-mon, and op-proposer. Applications interacting with dispute games must adapt to the new game types and retrieve the correct chain-specific roots. Users do not need to take action as previously submitted withdrawal proofs remain valid. The success of these changes on testnets will determine the Sept. 24 mainnet execution.
