Anthropic Warns of Government Regulatory Risks in IPO Prospectus
Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has warned that the government's perception and regulation of its company and AI technology could negatively impact its relationships with private customers and partners ahead of its initial public offering (IPO). Although government contracts account for less than 1% of annual revenue, the company stated that deteriorating relations with the government could lead to revenue losses and reputational damage. In its IPO prospectus, Anthropic highlighted the government's stance as a major business risk, emphasizing that government perceptions could affect customers, partners, employees, and investors. Additionally, it warned of the potential for advanced AI to pose 'catastrophic or existential risks' to humanity. Anthropic's IPO valuation is expected to reach up to $20 billion, amid growing concerns over the development and safety controversies surrounding AI technology. The company cited recent incidents involving its relationship with the U.S. government as examples of business risks, mentioning an incident where President Donald Trump ordered a halt to the use of AI models and the U.S. Department of Commerce's export restrictions. It warned that such government actions could lead to reputational damage.
