Introduction
If you know Ahmed XM, you likely know the highlight reel: the Nigerian crypto trader, the educator, the 300,000-strong Telegram community, and the Instagram lifestyle. His personal brand has been built around PnL screenshots, luxury, and relentless hustle.
But in EP.02 of WE Talk, we step behind the profile. Host Jacob sits down with Ahmed to explore the years before the money, the hidden psychological toll of trading with a massive audience, and what keeps someone in the game after taking a brutal $120,000 loss.
The Hustle Before the Charts
Long before crypto, there was Lagos. Ahmed was born and raised in a city he describes as demanding and unforgiving. He studied Biology Education at Bauchi State University and was preparing for a career as a teacher, but while still in school he took on whatever work he could find—carrying cement and blocks on construction sites, driving a tricycle, and working on his mother’s farm.
He wasn’t struggling for basic necessities, but he wanted more independence. “I didn’t want an average life,” he says. Growing up in Lagos gave him what he calls the discipline and hunger to keep pushing; his mother gave that ambition a more personal purpose. When asked why money mattered to him, he points to her. His original goal was to make enough money to make his mother happy, and later to improve life for his entire family. Today, she has a better home and a car, while his siblings attend private universities.
For Ahmed, wealth started as a way to change his circumstances. Trading eventually gave him the means to do that.
The Heavy Price of Public Success
Social media rarely shows the drawdown. This year, Ahmed took his biggest trading loss yet: approximately $120,000 in one position.
Yet when Jacob asks whether he would go back to 2018 and make the same career choice again, Ahmed’s answer is immediate: “I would choose trading over and over again.”
The more complicated part of his story is what happens when a trader becomes a public figure. Ahmed’s Telegram community has more than 300,000 subscribers, and he knows that his views can influence how other people approach the market. “When I enter a trade, I’m not carrying only my own psychology anymore,” he says. “I’m carrying the psychology of other people too.”
That influence comes with a personal cost. Ahmed describes himself as an introvert, yet years of posting trading content on TikTok and Instagram gradually turned him into someone strangers recognize in public. Fame has also reduced his privacy and changed the expectations people have of him.
Education became one of the ways he responded to that responsibility. When he started trading in 2018, Ahmed says reliable crypto and trading education was difficult to access in Nigeria and across Africa. In 2023, he founded XM Trading Academy to help close that gap. According to Ahmed, the academy has since graduated thousands of students, including people from other African countries.
Beyond the G-Wagon
During the interview, while reflecting on his early desires for luxury and material success, Ahmed shares a telling anecdote about his dream vehicle: a Mercedes-AMG G-Wagon. Before he could afford one, he would repeatedly post pictures of the car on his Story as the ultimate symbol of having "made it". Now that he actually owns it, he admits it simply feels like a "normal car".
It is a small detail, but it captures a larger shift in his relationship with money. Once a financial goal has been achieved, the goal itself has to be reconsidered.
For Ahmed, the next goal is clear: “My current goal is to build generational wealth.” He says he wants to create wealth that can benefit his children and future generations rather than simply accumulate more things for himself.
That thinking is already reflected in his work outside trading. Through XM Charity Foundation, Ahmed directs part of his income toward education and healthcare, including supporting government schools with books, chairs, and repairs, as well as helping people in hospitals. His team also distributes exercise books featuring simple phrases such as “B for Bitcoin” and “P for Profit” to introduce children to finance, crypto, and blockchain from an early age.
His view of Nigeria’s crypto market is similarly forward-looking. Ahmed describes Nigerian young people as entrepreneurial and receptive to technology, while pushing back against the stereotypes that often shape outside perceptions of the country. He sees Nigerian traders as an important part of Africa’s crypto story.
Access is another part of that story. Ahmed discusses using WEEX P2P to purchase USDT with Nigerian naira and says he has previously shared WEEX P2P promotions with his community.
He also expects AI to play a growing role in trading. Rather than dismissing new technology, Ahmed believes traders should experiment with it and give it room to develop. That conversation naturally leads to WEEX AI Wars, where AI-assisted and manual trading approaches compete in the same environment.
Yet after discussing losses, wealth, influence, and AI, his advice to the next generation remains surprisingly basic:
“Chase knowledge first.”
It is perhaps the clearest summary of where Ahmed stands today. He entered trading looking for financial independence, built a community around that experience, and then expanded into education and philanthropy. Now, he is thinking less about what wealth can buy and more about what it can build.
