Yemeni Government Launches Full-scale Counteroffensive Against Houthi Forces
On October 5, the Yemeni government announced a large-scale military operation against Houthi forces, aiming to reclaim all areas controlled by them. This operation was initiated after the Houthis rapidly advanced southward in September, seizing the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and large areas along the Red Sea coast, marking a high-intensity phase in the Yemeni civil war, with Red Sea shipping and Saudi energy facilities becoming focal points of the conflict. Rashad Alimi, chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, stated in a televised address that government forces would continue their actions until the country is free from Houthi control and called on the Houthis to lay down their arms. Alimi pointed out that the government decided to counterattack after all opportunities for conflict de-escalation had failed, expressing gratitude for Saudi support while urging regional allies and international partners to assist government forces and national institutions.
